Lincolnshire Reform mayor courted US oil and gas executive about fracking in UK

25 Feb 2026

As more than one local Lincolnshire resident has said: Support for this seems strange given how it would scar the landscape and her previous opposition to pylons because of how they would do the same.

Another resident said the following regarding fracking:

"Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is a bit like a high-stakes science experiment happening in someone’s backyard. While it’s a powerhouse for energy production, the "side effects" for rural communities can be significant and, at times, irreversible.

Here is a breakdown of the primary dangers of fracking on a rural countryside:

  •  Water Contamination and Scarcity
In rural areas, water is life—both for households and agriculture.
Fracking puts this at risk in two ways:
    • Chemical Seepage: The "fracking fluid" injected underground contains a cocktail of chemicals. If a well casing fails or a surface spill occurs, these toxins can leach into local aquifers and private wells.
    • Massive Consumption: A single well can require millions of gallons of water.
  • In rural regions prone to drought, this can deplete local water tables, leaving farmers and residents high and dry.

  • Industrialisation of the Landscape
Rural charm is often defined by silence and open space. Fracking transforms this into an industrial zone:
    • Traffic and Infrastructure: Quiet country roads aren't built for fleets of heavy tankers. This leads to rapid road degradation, dust pollution, and increased traffic accidents.
    • Noise and Light Pollution: Drilling is a 24/7 operation. The constant drone of engines and the glow of floodlights can disrupt local wildlife and the sleep patterns of nearby residents.

  • Environmental and Geologic Risks
The physical act of breaking rock deep underground has surface-level consequences:
    • Induced Seismicity: Injecting wastewater back into the ground has been linked to "man-made" earthquakes in regions that historically never experienced them.
    • Air Quality: Flaring (burning off excess gas) releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and methane, which can create localised smog and health issues for those living downwind.

  • Impact on Agriculture and Livestock
For a rural economy, the land is the primary asset.
    • Soil Health: Accidental spills of brine or fracking chemicals can sterilize soil, making it unproductive for crops for years.
    • Livestock Health: There have been documented cases of livestock falling ill or experiencing reproductive issues after consuming contaminated water or grazing near drill sites.

Is this really the risk the people of Lincolnshire want to take?"

The East Lindsey Liberal Democrats oppose fracking of our countryside.
